Class: Euro Traveller
Route: Zurich – London Heathrow
Date: 29th June 2014
Aircraft: Airbus A319
Flight Length: 1 hour 15mins
A short hop back to London after spending a week in the Swiss alps. Departing from Zurich’s modern terminal 1A. I was to fly on a rather old Airbus A319, in a two class layout, Business / Economy. After a short stint in the Dnata Skyview lounge (thanks to airport angel) and a rapid train ride to the satellite terminal, I was ready to board. Using the business fast track boarding (courtesy of my BA Silver Elite Executive Club status) I was aboard the almost full 17:10 Sunday night back to Heathrow. Unfortunately there was a delay of about 20 minutes due to air traffic control so about 17:30 we pushed back and after a short taxi left Zurich airport around 30 mins behind schedule.
Sitting in 18B I had a decent view out over Zurich, though limited legroom thanks to 17B reclining their seat immediately after takeoff! Service was fast, and the cabin crew seemed happy enough. Many of you will recognise that BAs once large offering of a meal has shrunk down to a small snack and sure enough I was provided with a sweet potato and falafel wrap, complimented with a Vodka and Coke – what a combo! Whilst this was absolutely fine for an hours flight, I’d be left feeling quite hungry on a longer European flight.
BA still feels above the low cost carriers, despite their reduced food offerings! The seat pitch was average, and the onboard service was friendly and efficient. I think BAs short haul economy product is still worth the slight premium over easyjet and certainly Ryan air. However I have flown this route multiple times with Swiss Air before and I have to say they do offer a superior product, though this is at a premium of about £50 more.
